Hi 72 degrees. Following your suggestion I checked the chain adjustment.I had adjusted it originally to the Haynes manual setting but gave it a bit more slack. I CANT BELEIVE IT.!!!! It goes into neutral almost perfectly now but I think it is hindered by the clutch not clearing properly. Even with next to no free play on the cable , I can put it in first gear and can feel it trying to pull away very slightly although the clutch lever is fully dis-engaged. I have put all new stuff in the clutch.....plates...spring...thrust shaft etc and slightly chamfered the tangs and the slots in the housing. I am wodering if I could make a longer thrust shaft?? would it give it that bit extra clearance?? Also I cant get the carburettor to run reliably slowly it usually speeds up.

Changed the oil yet? Thick oil can make everything drag more. Otherwise it might be the clutch push rod mushroomed and so not quite long enough. No idea if they are still available. You could make a new one out of silver steel rod hardened at the ends. Another dodge used on YZ250s is to put a valve shim inside between the rod and the bit that pushes on the pressure plate. Only works if that is like a hollow mushroom though that you can pop the right diameter and thickness shim in to.

I've never worked on a 50 though so am guessing.

As to the idle increasing that sounds like possibly an air leak on the intake somewhere. Bad carb cap seal or a leaky inlet 'manifold'. No real idea about 50s though. You might try spraying WD40 or similar over the carb while running to see if it is sucked in.

Hi 72 degrees. No I haven't changed the oil yet, I had the chance to adjust the chain yesterday but I will get a bottle of oil a.s.a.p.
I have previously faced the manifold flange and fitted a new gasket. The plastic bush in the carb is new as well. The carb is a Delorto SHA14 12mm and it does not have an idle mixture screw only a throttle stop screw. Plenty of slack in the cable. But I will check with WD40 as you suggested

Hi Chunky,
How many plates (with tangs) does your clutch have? Original clutches have three but there are clutches that come with four plates, if it's one of these it's difficult to stop it dragging. These four plate items are fitted to overcome clutch slip problems, which are usually caused by too much oil and weak springs.

These clutches are very sensitive to the oil used so as 72 says make sure you got the correct spec oil in there.

Hi Leigh. My bike has a three plate clutch and its all new stuff. It could be a few days before I get round to working on it . The Haynes manual states 900 ml of oil but I think I will put about 750ml in and see how it goes. I will let you and 72 degrees know what happens.

I run my 50's so that with the dip stick screwed in the oil is just a couple of mm above the bottom of the dip stick.
