I did a "stone" dance with a Morini tank and the is still there after many years, also did it with a Suzuki 1000 GSXr tank after the bike had been standing nearly 2 years and did not use a sealer,
So far so good

Many thanks chaps.

Will pass on these observations.

The very latest I heard was that the assistant chief wrench was trawling through his contacts in Italy; but even in the unlikely event that a replacement tank is successfully sourced, how likely is it that it will be in any better condition than mine? Stone dance the only sensible option, I feel, but there is some reluctance to go down this route because of the awkward shape of the tank.

Don't use stones or any of that 'fill it with nuts and bolts, wrap it it a towel and chuck it in a cement mixer'nonsense - use electrolysis, with soda crystals and a 9v battery - google it - it's an easy set up and uses chemistry to fight chemistry. And don't confuse this type of electrlysis with unwanted hair removal.....

Have heard of this method and imagine it will prove more appealing to guys who make their living applying their skills to the upkeep of rather more expensive stuff than my old Dakota. Will make this very suggestion today, thank you.

Your Dakota is just as relevant as any other Gilera, or any other motorcycle - it's not about value or 'expensive', it's about doing it right. This method is cheap, easy to set up and relatively safe and if you want it free of oxide it's the way to go.

Still plugging away! Seems the bike is nearing completion-see attached pics. Previously -mislaid gear train for the starter motor located and fitted; does anyone know if a solenoid is involved in this area?
