Hi Everyone,

So at Christmas I came across a 2002 Gilera Coguar that had previously been a write off back in 2013 and not seen the road since. I decided I wanted to make a project of it with the help of my much more mechanically minded partner.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any good places to get parts? I have a lot of the bits and bobs but I've been struggling to find items like a Fuel Cap (as it doesn't have one)and a panel to cover the battery. With the bike I received a bag of "parts" which is a bit of an Aladdin's cave of things that are useful and not so much.

We are in West Yorkshire, so either online or local to us would be fantastic!

I also found the manual on this website which will be super helpful

Side note/Additional info:
Its had a few owners since been written off, all with the idea of rebuilding it, whilst having no knowledge of how too. Its safe to say its had some dodgy wiring, paint jobs and all round shoddy building. The previous owner to me got the engine working, replacing the carb etc. We've decided to complete strip it down and work our way up again as some of the wiring is terrible with wires sticking out everywhere and the whole frame could do with been sanded down and re painted anyways. The idea is to make a few modifications along the way too, like changing it to a single seat.

Thanks
Laura :)

first of all... it's a Gilera Coguar not a Cougar ;)
But in the end that's the same in italian and english. At least as far as i know.

Maybe ebay is a source for parts. Here around, in Germany, there are sometimes parts available from bike breakers.
For engine parts maybe Honda is a source.
Again, as far as i know, the engine is build by Honda.
Good luck ;)

ciao Jaochim

Hey!

Thanks for the reply. You can thank my phone for that spelling mistake! However I have changed it :D

I’ve been keeping my eye on eBay, nothing much is coming up. There is a fuel cap, however it’s really rusted so not worth the money the are asking. Don’t see many around theee parts anymore which I think is what’s making it difficult.

Going to see if there’s any breaker yards local to us :)

Hi Laura,

The Coguar was made with a Honda 125 engine, so any engine parts should be available from your local Honda dealer. There was also 'some' commonality with other parts between Coguar and Honda with I seem to remember brake parts and possibly suspension. Been a long time since I was Gilera involved but memory says if you can't get Gilera parts from Bob Wright in Weston super Mare, try local Honda dealer and you might just find bits you are looking for could be ther same.

Hi Paul,

Thank you, luckily the engine seems to be the one part of the bike that doesn't really need anything doing with it (so far anyways). It has had a lot of work on the engine by the prior owner.

The thing I'm oddly struggling with the most is a fuel cap. At the moment the tank doesn't have one at all. I've only seen one so far and it isn't worth paying the money they want as its so rusted.

May seem like a stupid question but would a fuel cap from a different bike fit? The bike originally has the lovely tear drop shaped cap, which I really like but it may be a case of giving in and retrofitting one from a different bike.

Will check out Bob Wright and then Honda if all else fails.

Thanks
Laura

Hi Laura,

If a Honda fuel cap won't fit, perhaps try some Italian bike Dealers. Take the tank off and take it to as many dealers that are near you just to see if they have anything. If you still have no luck try ebay or even a breakers if there are any near you. Piaggio probably still have a London office, so a call to them to find out the actual company that supplied the original fuel caps may be the way to go.

Hope you find one and get another Gilera back on the road where they belong.
Paul
