PPP one thing at a time - 1st win the lottery ;)
Strip and blow out all the passages and jets, just been doing that to mine to remove its water and rust  If you did not do it already replace the manifold to head Allen bolts with m6 Hex head, much easier to fit ;) if you can put all the bits in an ultra sound cleaner, if you don't have a good aerosol carb cleaner has to do.

Thanks for that, yes carb is stripped and have been down town for new 'o'rings and a gasket maker cause things look a little second-hand. Lots of green gunk in the float bowl because of our very very very poor quality fuel that has aged badly. It is just starting to get yucky hard stuff forming on the needle etcetera and the needle jet is stuck solid. Give me a few days and I think it will be running, the weather is beautiful at the moment and I am on my days off so I am getting the jetski out and going fishing tomorrow. It's a tough life.
I'll report back soon.

Funnily enough I've been jet ski-ing as well but that's because it's never stopped bloody raining for what seems like months. Last year feet upon feet of snow, this year feet upon feet of rain.

Anyway, if the Nordie has been sitting for any length of time the carbs will be gummed up and the best remedy is to get them ultrasonically cleaned. I know giving them a meticulous clean with stuff and cans of this and that will clean them up but the best way to ultra clean them is to zap them in an ultrasonic. My carbs were cleaned after the bike was in storage for 8 years and it runs like a Swiss watch, the fueling is spot on. Might seem like hassle but a worthwhile investment if its been off the road for a while.

I quite agree and they will get the full treatment once I procure a few parts. However in the meantime I have the Nordwest running. A thorough clean and a bit of a free-up along with some new fuel did the trick. Unfortunately the starter motor has an horrendous noise when cranking over at times and the needle valve is leaking badly so the carb is flooding but other than that it runs as good as new. Next I will place a parts order. There is nowhere in New Zealand I know of to get the parts I need, carb kit, cambelt, speedo cable air filter element and the like so I will start internet shopping I guess. I hope I choose wisely.
I will report back soon.

Hi Kiwi,
I bought carb kits from www.yambits.com intended for the TK carb also fitted to Xt600 Yam traily.
Unless you can find an industrial supplier who has, Bob Wright is probably your best bet for the cam belt, the sprag clutch is most probably the culprit for making nasty noises when cranking the engine as it grips and slips, time to open it and look the garter spring, if its all mangled they can be repaired using a spring from a fork seal or industrial shaft seal, if you want new your best bet is probably a local KTM or Ducati dealer as they use similar Sprag clutches ;) Speedo cable from Uncle Bob or there is a Yam cable (I think from Diversion) that fits

That is awesome thank you. I will look in to all of those options. The sprag clutch doesn't look too hard to get at, can it be done in the frame?
