Hi Kiwi,
The sprag clutch can be removed without removing the engine, if you lay the bike on its side even without draining the oil ;) remove the rotor cover and rotor (which you have to do when replacing the belt) then remove the side cover, not forgeting to find 1 Allen bolt hiding between the crank and the ignition trigger.
Good luck
john

Aye, and if you look at he column on the left there is a "Pattern Parts' page - it'll give you the info on what can be procured from non Gilera sources for substitute parts but I think John is right with the speedo cable from the Yam - it's the 900 model though - should be long enough, just.

Hey, thanks for that. I see Bob Wright's have a speedo cable listed. I could make a cable if I had the outer but that is missing also. The carb, started drive and air filter are the main parts at this stage. I am getting quite anxious to ride it. I imagine it will be a lot of fun.

Great advice thanks, yes I plan to do the sprag clutch when I do the cambelt, the old two birds with one stone thing, and I hope to get a needle valve locally from the Yamaha dealer so I can have a few rides first, (not many because of the cambelt age). I thank you all for your help, it is really appreciated here on the other side of the world. :)

Nah, it's not a lot of fun, it's better than that....;}

Once you get used to the power delivery and the vibes it becomes a bit of a gunfighter. Get it in the groove and use the torque and you piss yourself laughing every ride out.

Many years ago I took a Nordwest speedo cable in to a local friendly bike dealer and asked them if they could match it. I ended up with an RD125LC item which did the job. A quick check on Wemoto suggests that a pattern 'Slinky Glide' cable is available for them or the XJ900. This may help: Outer 91cm Inner 95cm Nuts Are Both 11mm (The XJ)
Hopefully an NZ supplier can be found but the Yamaha parts system works pretty well for stuff from the Nordie era if you have to order one.
