looks like a normal pickup.
But the gap is much to wide.
Funny ;)

Maybe you could make the holes fit with a file or so.
Just to test if it starts with a gap of about 0,8mm

Thanks Joachim, I came up with the same plan yesterday but was a little more brutal and used a drill however the result was the same. Currently I have 25thousands of an inch or about .63mm. Maybe a bit close but it will do for a trial start. The exercise does leave me wondering what is different to necessitate this modification. The only conclusion I can make is that the rotor has been changed and that would require the replacement of the charging circuit also. I have the numbers off the rotor and stator. The alternator stator coil has 11HY stamped on it and the rotor has 032000 6960 DENSO VCE78. It is obviously a Nippon Denso unit from Japan but I don't know if it is original or not, and for that matter, correct for this application. If anyone has any thoughts I will be truly grateful. My next step is to reassemble the system and recheck the pick-up wiring in case I have damaged it then try for a spark. I have installed a new battery to ensure good voltage so self protection of the ignition circuit shouldn't be an issue and I will recheck for a short in the kill switch.
Thanks again

Thanks for your help, you folk were right on the mark. After drilling the base plate and realigning the pick-up the spark came bouncing back even through a faulty sparkplug resistor cap which will be replaced as soon as I can get one. I had two leaking fuel taps that fixed themselves and everything else worked a treat. Gordon, the owner is thrilled. Again, thanks for your help.

Update,
I just got home from a slightly illegal shakedown ride to see what condition the Gilera is in and I can report it is in awesome shape. What a treat to ride, I won't be wanting to give it back!!!
Everything except the speedo works and it does everything so well. Perhaps doesn't look much but I am sure has a heart of gold.
Thanks again for all your help. I think I will head off to the shed to refit the starter on my Nordwest. I'll report back later.

Glad it lives again. Just a pity RCs and Nordwests are too high in the seat for me these days.
