Hi guys, got a leaky head gasket, well that’s what I reckon as the expansion tank starts to piss water from the overflow and the engine misfires. So does the engine really have to come out to get the head off and a new gasket in ? Makes you wonder about Radweld or similar!

That's the only way I ever managed it - more than once

I've only removed with the engine out, in theory it should be possible if you can remove and refit the studs but is it worth the hassle.

That rings a bell John. I'm sure I read an account of someone doing it that way. In my experience with the '604' the studs stretched eventually and needed replacing anyway. I got fairly quick at engine in/out on the hill climber though.

I knew you had stretched studs and inquired with a US specialist company about extra hi tensile studs but they quoted about gbp1000 for 4, so that idea got shelved, but also thought about increasing the size from m10 to m12 to give more hold down, then the GFR chassis I had planned to put it into evaporated???? the spare engine is still here with std or 604 cylinder.

Just out of interest has anyone else had a head gasket fail on them due to old age ?
