Hi has any one experienced this?

On returning from an enjoyable ride I stopped in the way back. Started the bike on the button and ride off, after about 1/2 mile bike suddenly cut out, on trying to restart just heard a vicious metallic grinding & no engine cranking/starting. Got the bike home and thinking it was the starter clutch, stripped the left hand side. Starter clutch perfectly ok and also the gear train back to the starter. I’ve now stripped the starter and found that the pinion on the end of the armature completely stripped whet it makes contact with the planetary reduction gears. All three reduction gears show zero damage. I took it to a local auto electrician who had not seen anything similar before. Sounds like an expensive repair or possible used replacement. Any ideas on what may have caused this to happen. Up to then absolutely no problem!
