Hello all, New to the forum and have just bought an 88model saturno 500.

I've noticed the temp gauge runs at the high end of the gauge and just touches the red on occasions. I have fitted another second hand thermostat and flushed the cooling system and bled and refilled with new coolant. The fan operates as it should and cuts in around 92 degs C.

My question is this normal? Just seems high, I'm in Australia and temps at the moment are above 30 degs C.

Hi GT,
The fan cutting in at 95 sound about right running a pressurized system with a thermostat should allow the temps to go up around 105 without boiling, my Saturno was run for many years without a fan (or temp gauge) and only became a problem I'm told if stopped in traffic, as I'm in a hot place I refitted the fan and have been OK

Why fit a second hand thermostat? It would be more reliable to fit a new one - chances are it'll work better and more accurately than one of unknown provenance.

The engine is probably knackered - I'll give you £20 for it......;}

Airlock somewhere?

Thanks for the replies,

It appears normal when checking the temp with an infared temp gun but the gauge running as high as it does is unnerving.

As for the 2nd hand thermostat I tested both the original and the 2nd hand unit and they both worked but the original was missing the o'ring to block the bypass hose, besides where do you buy a new thermostat for one of these?

Hi Murray,
make sure all the connections between the sensor in the head and the temp gauge are clean and not having a high resistance giving a high temp reading
