Hi Murray,
make sure all the connections between the sensor in the head and the temp gauge are clean and not having a high resistance giving a high temp reading

Thanks John I'll check that.
Any idea where to purchase a new thermostat?

The other thing I noticed was when the temp ran high while cruising at 80-100kmh if I pulled the clutch in and let the engine idle the temp would drop back to about 3/4 on the gauge?

If you have put both thermostats into boiling water and they opened I doubt you will need another one, My 1st place to try for spares would be Bob Wright in the UK, but I have bought bits from Germany and Italy when all else fails
I would expect the temp to drop when coasting with the engine at idle speed, less heat produced and a good flow of air through the radiator. ;)

You could always try to fit an oil cooler to bring the overall temperature of the motor down.
Also, have you checked the spark plug is the correct grade? It's a long shot....

Nothing wrong with the standard cooling system, don't forget mine is a modded 600 Nordie engine using the standard radiator in a hot climate, only 36c this afternoon but can be mid 40c in June :S :S
