I decided to remove, clean and fit new o rings seals etc to the carb on the new to me IoM Saturno 500. The float bowl was leaking a bit.

Workshop manual says float levels 24mm +/- 2mm. Mine was set at the 18.5mm that the Dellorto manual specifies for the PHM40.

Two questions:

1. Why did Gilera specifiy a very different float level to that specified by Dellorto?; and
2. What would be the impacy of my float level being so much lower?

I've only done 400km on the bike but performance seemed great.

Now I have cleand the carb and re seat the idle mixture and rpm it is idling really nicely but performance seems unchanged (only a 10 km ride though.....)

If it runs well leave it alone-I would believe Dellorto rather than the manual......

Yes Murray jets were totally stock as per the workshop manual
Main 138
1dle 53
choke 40
needle k4

this is interesting as the IoM comes with a K&N air filter instead of the airbox but jetting is identical.

Maybe the only carb setting difference is the float level being 18mm instead of 22mm. This would make the idle mixture a bit richer than stock, I think

after a decent ride I noticed the bike was popping on the over-run. Float level of 23mm compared to 18mm would be leaner so I suspect that is the cause of popping.

I'm going back to 18mm float level.........
