Hi Again folks,
As an update, it would seem the part number is
Piaggio 321034
I've found one for sale in Italy, erm, 89 Euros, before I have it sent to Scotland, so I think I might be tempted to run my Saturno without a thermostat for now and see how it performs.
I am a Scotsman after all!!
Alan.

Taking the current climate into consideration a thermostat is probably the last thing you need ;}
Up here in Aberdeen the seagulls are making their own sandwiches......

The purpose of a thermostat, as we know, is to get an engine to and to keep an engine at its optimum operating temperature, as also do the thermoswitch controlled fans, normally 86- 94 degrees. Running a motor cold is not good on many levels, also when a wax stat opens, theres is still a natural restriction in the water flow, no stat creates full flow and over cooling and in some cases water loss in specfic areas. because of the pump flow and natural thermo syphon nature of a cooling system.

I'm pretty well over the whole waterpump thing, so I've been looking at fitting an electric water pump (someday) - which would dispense with the need for a thermostat and the bypass (see e.g. daviescraig.com.au/electric-water-pumps) as well. However a new belt tensioner would have to be made to replace the standard water pump ...

I have a Davis Craig pump installed on a car i'm building here in Kano and think it would be too bulky to fit on a Nordwest, if you wanted to go electric the Mikuni pump i use on my Jedi/Kawasaki race car is far more compact and worked with modified ZZr1100 and now ZX10r engine.
I don't think there is much wrong with the Gilera pump apart from it's age and scarcity, the Pumps made by Peter in Germany look to be very nice, not cheap, but in small batch production what do you expect.
