Hi

i have 2 sprockets here
The heights are 22,94mm and 23,03mm

The 2 stepped washers have (the height of the inner step) 3,13mm and 3,05mm.

Let's see what you have ;)

ciao Joachim

Hi Joachim,
Yes, the inner step measures 3mm on the broken one, and the shoulder 1.6mm, total 4.6mm. I can't measure the sprocket without taking it off.

so that's not the reason why your washer is broken.
My spring washer is about 1,96mm thick
The total height is about 3mm (because it's not a flat disc)
The washer is used, not new

I think the material it's made from that is the culprit?, the washer I made from mild steel seems to be fine, but it is rather strange it should have happened at all?.
The only other variable is the thickness of the sprocket, if it were too thick the stepped washer would have to travel more before it contacted the centre of the shaft.

did you know what a spark probe is?
I hope that's the right word for it :)
Prssing a probe of a material to a bench grinder watching the sparks generated.
If you have something to compare you can find out which material you have.
Not very accurate but it should be possible to find out if you have cast iron or something else.
I have just asked aunt Google for a pic but did not find anything for cast iron :(
If you have something you are shure that it's fom cast iron....

ciao Joachim

No, I don't have access to a spark probe, but I do have access to an Ion Probe! :), the lab is in the process of being refurbished just now, but I should be able to find the chemical make up of the part when it's up and running.
