Yes, I should have provided more information.

The standard/original arrangement, at least on my 500 Saturno, is a thick belleville washer under the bolt head. A belleville washer is slightly conical and acts as a spring as it flattens out.

So when you're tightening the bolt, a lot of force is going into just flattening the washer.

If you've got a belleville washer you will probably reach the recommended torque before the bolt is completely done up, so keep going until you feel it seated.

... And now I read the rest of the thread properly. I don't have any other washers in there, just the belleville which is something like 3mm thick.

meanwhile i have been told that on Saturnos there are 2 systems used.
The older ones have the system you described.
Newer ones have the stepped washer also used on the Nordies.
Maybe we all should check back this on our Saturnos/Nordies ;)

Hello Folks,
I read the cupped washer exerts force on the outer edge only, which would mean it shouldn't be flattened?. The stepped washer has an O/D of 25mm, and the inner diameter, which goes inside the cupped washer is 19.5MM. The overall thickness is 4.6mm, with the part that goes in the cupped washer 3mm, shoulder 1.6mm. I think that thickness is such that when torqued up the stepped washer contacts the sprocket shaft, and is designed to preload the cupped washer correctly?.
Be aware, when I torqued mine up, the stepped washer cracked into six or so bits, it looks to me to be cast, yes cast!, so I made up a few out of mild steel, with a thicker shoulder of 3mm, the inner dimension the same at 3mm. I marked the bolt, washers and sprocket with tipex, the cupped (belleville) washer does turn very slightly sometimes, but by a few degrees.
The sun is shining in Scotland, time to ride!
Alan.

Beg your pardon. I've just forgotten that. Shame on me.
I will do now

Here we have the first rain since... 2 months?

Hi Joachim,
I think perhaps it was the other way around, I was meant to send you the dimensions, sorry. I'm old, bad memory, or at least that's my excuse!!!.
