Hello folks,
Me again I'm afraid!.
1.
The temperature gauge on my Saturno is slowly creeping up when I ride, right up to the red, takes about 10 to 15 miles, I've bled and bled the system using the bolt on the head by the spark plug, new rad cap, new coolant, no oil in the water or water in the oil, pump is pushing the water around. Before I take the thermostat out, any ideas?. the thermostat was a used one from Bob, It does open when you put it in hot water, but of course I don't know how much it's meant to open. It is pushing water out somewhere, into the overflow tank I think, but very little, only takes a tiny amount to top it back up.

Anyone had to change the jetting after fitting a K&N pod filter?, strangely, the only jet changed is the main jet, it's a 140, should be a 128 (350cc).
Thanks in advance,
Alan.

Is the fan coming on? I can't remember if the temp gauge sender is separate but it might just be that.

Can't help with jetting. The 'Nordturno' had CR33 Keihins on ;)

Yep, the fan is coming on, only when the ignition is on though, but yes, it's coming on..

Coming on all the time? I thought it only was supposed cut in at a certain temperature?

On the Nordturno the fan had been removed and I only had a blinking LED wired up to the sender which generally didn't come on unless in slow moving traffic for a while. If I ignored it the rad would actually boil (no expansion tank either).

Does the coolant pushed in to the expansion tank return to the rad when it cools down? If not it might be early signs of head gasket weep round the cooling passages - though that is more of a problem on Nordies (particularly big-bore conversions).

I have had duff temperature senders on bikes getting alarmed when all was well. Worth checking that with hot water and a thermometer.

Sorry, confusion. The fan comes on at high temperature only, and only when the ignition is on IE, when the bike is running or when the engine is switched off, but the ignition is on.
The gauge doesn't regiister any drop in temperature, it might stay stationary while running, but if you stop at say traffic lights, the gauge will rise a little, when you ride away the temperature, or at least the gauge, doesn't reduce in indicated temperature
To me this means the radiator can't dissipate the heat, and that means the water flow is restricted, there's air/gas in the system, or it's not getting to pressure. As everything else has been checked, clean rad, new coolant, , pump ok, new rad cap, bled umpteen times, the only thing I can come up with is the thermostat restricting the flow too much?. Or of course the head gasket is leaking, but there's no indication of this, in fact when you switch the engine off you can take the rad cap off after a very short time, no coolant being forced out, this tells me there's not much pressure on the thermostat to rad loop?., the thermostat is restricting flow. But I'm very willing to listen to other theories?. I'll probably just pop the thermostat out and see what happens, if it's still creeping up I have larger problems.

Try putting the the stat into a pot of boiling water to make sure it fully opens, this work better if your wife is not at home ;)
