Reposting this as it doesn't seem to have shown up...?

Hi Joachim

I have tested the fan thermoswitch in boiling water....it does not work so I will make a manual switch until I can get another one.
Pulled apart the thermostat and tested that too, but I don't have a mercury thermometer so not sure when it opens.....but it does work.
The two small O-rings on the other end of the brass rod are very perished so I will try to get something similar. They are meant to seal and I guess it makes the pump more efficient and means all the water will go through to the radiator, instead of recirculating.

Yes thanks I have located the small hex bolt and will use this to check for air when I refill the radiator.

update: I went to a supplier in Grenoble yesterday and got O-rings for the thermostat.
In Grenoble at least it is hard to find a good auto supply like I am used to in NZ, and all the moto shops don't have a good range...usually just carry one product line. No decent bike cleaners....NO bungee cords!!! Almost no tools.

I will crack the bungee mystery...I will

Bungees found in a small town outside Grenoble but apparently you can get them at the larger Carrefour.
Today I refilled the cooling system, and then discovered that the 6mm hex bolt for bleeding air on top of the cylinderhead was in fact stripping itself as I wound it out (not winding the helicoil out as I first thought). Rats.
Semi permanent bodge was to find a stainless cap screw to replace the existing bolt, and put a nut on the inside so I could get enough torque to seal the copper washer. And a dab of high temperature silicon.

Its easy to bleed air by loosening the hose clamp at the nearby junction.
First test ride good, but a another hose clamp needed replacing. Longer ride tomorrow before committing myself to the ride up to England.

Kano looks interesting John

Very much like the curates bad egg, good in parts :silly: :S :woohoo:
For off road riding even the roads are off road and there is bush all the way down to South Africa and north to the Med, BUT north is bandit country that stopped the Dakar, think wild west 150 years ago add corruption, ignorance, extreme riches for the few (corrupt) and the rest living on a couple of US$ per day and about 60% unemployment and now we have Boko Haram terrorists, Oh and no bike shops at all, been here more than 30 years and slowly getting used to it B)
Regards
John
