After hours in the freezing cold I have almost lost the will to live with this feckin bike. I have had the carb set as per the manual and it still won't start. I (sometimes)get it to run but if I stop it, it won't start again. I have spoken to a guy that had a nordie a couple of years back with the same issue and he recalls finding the 'correct' settings on a dutch site ...but can't remember where and the details went when he sold the bike. Can anybody help, please

In the manual the setting height of the float are about 10mm too much, I will have a look in my manual when I get to work

Early bird at work :P
The manual says the float height is 35mm +/- 1mm but should be 24mm +/-2mm the air mixer screw should be 1.5 turns out +/- 0.5 turns.
Hope that gets you somewhere in the ball park

when had the carb worked properly for the last time?
Maybe some cleaning will do the job.
There is a little bore in the bowl which tends to be blocked.
I personally think that some ultrasonic cleaning is the best way to handle this.
Beside this, there are several other reasons for not running.
I just had someone here who had a bad ground problem. Found while trying to start in the beginning darkness. Without this little spark we would be still searching ;)

good luck, Joachim

Sure it's fuel? Like Joachim says it could be electrical.....coil?

Checked to see if you're getting a fat spark to eliminate that one? Then you can work it back.
If you can even bump it to get it running you could fiddle with the carb settings and hear the improvements in idle, richness etc. I always think that if you can get it going try to keep it going and fettle away.

It's frustrating for sure but at least you can be sure it's not rust in the tank!

Good luck,

P.

Nordwests can be very awkward to start if they have been standing unused for a while.
Sometimes draining the carb of 'stale' fuel, refilling and then cranking the motor while slowly pulling the 'choke' knob out helps.

The other possibility is a weak spark. Check the clearance between the ignition trigger and the 'pips' on the rotor.

On my tuned 604 even once running Keihin carbs it could be a pain to get going when cold. Early in the season I used to go a grade softer on the plug which helped a lot. That was an early CDI (not inductive) ignition system bike though.
