Hi All,
I posted this on in the quenching moments of igottagilera and never had any replies, hopefully somebody out there knows something. a slipping Sprag clutch is not welcome on a dirt bike far out in the bush, bump starting big singles is not for the faint hearted on a dirt track with 40c sun beating your coconut :(

Any enlightened thoughts on oils for Norwests, I have a bit of a dilemma here in Kano, the only reputable oil I can get ie not formulated in Nigeria is Mobil 1 full synthetic, which I have used in cars and my Honda Xr and will use in my Morini when it's run in, but what to do with the Nordwest and its Sprag clutch which is known not to like full synthetics, or do I go for the local rats piss and change every 1000Km's
Your comments welcome
Regards
John

I dont think that the starter clutch problem is a problem with the oil. It's just a question of wear and a weak design. Remember that this part was designed for a 350ccm Dakota.
Today sythetic oils are also good for motorcycles oil clutches.
You may have a look for a motorcycle oil with the JASO MA specification.
That will cause no problems neither with the clutch nor with the starter clutch.

BTW i hope anybody here knows how to repair the starter clutch with a KTM spare part?

ciao joachim

The local formulations don't make motorcycle specific oils or put any spec on the cans :(

Joachim do you have any part number for the KTM Sprag clutch and sorry to say no KTM dealers in Nigeria

KTM part # is 584.40.026.000
There is a nice little video on

There also was a printed manual out there. But RC600 has closed his website.
You can find something in french, if you can handle this search for 'rapidmouse'

But the vid is showing all you need to know. Beside this, i would also replace the complete roller set. Only fiddling around with the spring will bring the problem back some times later. But that is only my opinion ;)

Fixing the metall cover while opening ist (like shown in Lucas vid) is a good idea. I have not done this and had some problems getting the cover back.

Also its a good idea to smooth the surface of the roller skid (inside and outside) You may find several grooves if the clutch was slipping for some time. A lathe and some fine grinding paper will do this job. Don't remove to much material. Just make the surface smooth.

ciao joachim

PS still interested in the head gasket job?
I have done some pics over the weekend showing the extra O-ring on my 100mm cylinder from Volker Heim. I also have some pics and data which material to use. The head gasket for this cylinder is a solid aluminium one.
Oli is running his Saturno in the GSA championship (champ in 2009)without any head gasket. I also have some pics of that.
But i have to search for this informations ;)
So many things, so little time, you know :)

Thanks

I downloaded an RC600 manual and have browsed 'rapidmouse'

Looked the vid :)

Any info/pictures most welcome, I was thinking to make an alluminium gasket.
I will have to get a cutter for the O ring groove imported, we cannot find things like that in Kano :S

Oli is running his Saturno in the GSA championship (champ in 2009)without any head gasket. He must have vernier timing gears to set his camshaft correctly?? I also have some pics of that. Please do :)

So many things, so little time, you know :)

I do in dead especially as you get older time is going so quick

Thanks for everything
John

did i have a email address of you?
If not, can i use the one from the german gileraclub forum?
