Typical, I went to start the bike to go for the mot and when I turned the fuel on it poured from the pipe underneath the bike.
I turned the petrol off and tapped the float bowl lightly with a small hammer, turned the fuel back on and tried to start the bike, flattened the battery which had been on my charger overnight and then cancelled the mot.
I'm assuming it is now flooded so the battery is back on charge and i'll have a nother go later.
Wondering if i'll need to take the plug out ?
Is this a common problem and do I need to remove the carb to see what's wrong or shall i risk it and leave it alone ?

I was all excited about my first ride on the bike, never mind eh!

Hi Sharpo,
Looking through the old GeN magazines many recommended shutting the fuel off before stopping the engine, I had a float valve fail on my Nordie, at first it would only leak when I 1st turned on the fuel, then it got so bad it pee'd all over the floor, go on fleebay and look for Yamaha XT 600 carb overhaul kits and you will find the bits for the same TK carb.
Ironically, due to my Nordie carb leaking I fitted the ex 72degrees Keihin CR's, left the fuel valve open and filled the crankcase full of petrol :S Doh
I now try to remember to shut them off after running.

Cool John, thanks, took it apart, saw nothing put it back together , starts no problem.
It reminds me of my youth, spent tinkering and tuning Lambretta's, loved every minute of it.
Another week to wait for the mot now, oh well!

Aaah a return to youth ;) that's what it's all about, in my case I never left it B)
It could have been a small bit of grunge from all the years standing, just stopping the float valve seating.Pleased to hear it's going again, it's a bitch getting the carb out for fettling :S
Take care
John
