Looking round the bike today and noticed the chain has been rubbing the edge of the tyre although when it's stationary there is a gap.

I have the wheel adjusted so the tyre is equidistant from the swingarm on each side and the chain free movement up and down at the mid point is 40mm.

There is some side to side movement of the chain and I can touch the tyre if I push the chain over but I thought that was normal.

I have opened the throttle a few times with the revs below 3k and it has chugged and complained a bit but I wouldn't have thought it would cause the chain to slap the tyre.

Any ideas? or is it normal.

I used to get it on my Nordwests, particularly the hill climber. You should see the rear tyre on my YZ450F. Well chewed by the chain, though if spun on a paddock stand it doesn't foul at all. Some supermoto riders using the modern 165 tyres in converted MX bikes fit a guide on the swingarm. Like this, but it isn't really necessary on a Nordie as they were designed to run a 160/60:

I've found that all the Avon tyres I have used in three different bikes have a wider profile than say Metzeler, Bridgestone or Pirelli tyres. Maxxis SuperMax also come out pretty wide too but the Avon's were pretty chewed up by the chain.
