I know Italian electrics work by their own peculiar brand of magic but before I start stripping off panels and tracing wires that are no longer the same colour as when they left the factory, can anyone think why my brake light will only come on when the front brake is operated but the headlight and tail light are switched off and won't work when they are on?

Probably a bad earth on the rear light unit.
