I recently replaced the carb with a new old stocker I bought from Bob Wright a few years ago.
This was due to a misfire and higher than usual fuel consumption and oily fuel smell from the exhaust.
Unfortunately the misfire is still there until 4.5 to 5k when the thing absolutely flies.
I spoke to Bob and he mentioned raising the needle one notch- any other ideas?
As I said, the misfire has been ongoing for some time and I've serviced the bike,cleaned the air filter (K&N), replaced the spark plug,coil, ignition lead,checked and re-made all the ECU and earth connections, checked and adjusted if necessary the valve clearances, replaced the cam belt and double checked the timing, fresh higher octane fuel, inspected the intake rubbers for splits and damage, (non found) and wonder if I've missed anything obvious.

Is this an induction ignition model or the early CDI system up to 228 * 51763?

If CDI I'd check the resistance of the ignition winding on the stator. Also check the ignition sensor to rotor clearance. Could be the sensor possibly.

Given that you have a new carb set that tends to rule out the CV diaphragm. Can't see why it should need other than standard needle position unless it has been 'tuned' - standard exhaust silencer on it?

It sounds like un-burnt fuel in the exhaust which suggests a weak spark at low rpm or too rich a mixture mid range. In which case I'd think actually lowering the needle to lean it off. Presumably it starts OK?

Its a 1994 model 228/071017.
I'm planning on replacing the fuel hoses in case it's actually fuel starvation too. It no longer smells rich with this new carb- which is incidentally specifically for the 558 Nordwest.
It has an Arrow end can and starts on the button. It ran brilliantly in the past with the same set up but over the past year has run like crap.
I'll check the resistance values when I get back to the UK and after the MOT.

My recently acquired Nordy was a pig to start, did all the usual, cleaned carb, iridium plug, new plug cap, checked all the connections-in the end a new HT lead and non resistance plug cap cured it.
