Yes.... I found a photo of a starter for sale on gumtree with excellent photos, all the bits that retain and space the small starter 'dog' gear are missing, so it floats along the shaft as it wants, in and out of mesh...another cup of tea and a long stare at what I have for now. ;)

pic of complete starter and my bits with bits missing.

so... theres a set of 6, in 3 pairs, facing eachother of 'pre-load' cup washers, to allow the drive dog to slip over the mating face of the drive gear, as its pressure on the drive gear is pre set, so I am missing 3 cup washers, A spacer and and end bolt... I think !

Thanks John, it all makes sense to me and I am missing a spacer, that goes behind the drive gear to centralise the gear on the intermediate gear below. 3 cup washers and maybe a small spacer, these create the preload on the drive dog and the end bolt to hold it all together ! I can improvise if I have to, now I understand how it actually works.

OK I'll take a picture and measure up the spacers and leave you to find the cup washers

Hi, I have found a nylon spacer washer that keeps the gear in line and away from the shaft circlip and motor body. A shouldered bolt for the nose, its them pesky cup washers ! but we will get there, many thanks.
