I wanted to thank you all for your input and help... the Nordwest should be done this morning, thanks to all who helped source the parts, but in true fashion it bit my arse one more time, all timed up with new pump etc....hit the go button and the starter is slipping ! haha, I need to walk away from this bike for a week, it will not defeat me.... well, it just might ! nah.

Next.... slipping sprag clutch.

Hi Nigel
I have opened and repaired 2 Sprag starter motor clutches, both had failed because the garter spring that keeps the sprags pressed onto the ramps had stretched and got frazzled.
They can be repaired if you can prize open the swaged edge of the outer cover with a screw driver to get the inside gubbins exposed and you have a long enough length of garter spring? To replace the damaged one, fitting the outer cover back I pressed the assembly(using a bench vice) through a flange with the inside hole bored to suite the outside diameter of the clutch, this closes the former flanged edge to hold the assemble together again

how long will/did this kind of repair last?

I think you still know, the sprag clutch is replaceable by a KTM part.
Unfortunately this is about 75Euro
A few days ago i reeived another one from Poland (ebay).
Price is about 50Euro.
But i am not shure if i will use it.
Quality 'looks' much lower than the KTM part :(
You also can get this clutchs from chinese Alibaba. But i never got that managed.

ciao Joachim

Hi Joachim,
One has been on my Nordie for about 5 years, the other I kept as a spare, the only thing I found bad when I opened them was the garter spring.

I met up with ZacPike yesterday, we dropped the starter off, it seems its another bodge on the bike ! as the pinnion gear has misaligned with the drive gear due to the previous idiot putting random spacers etc in there and the drive gear moving on the pinnion shaft ... haha, its all good fun. B) So maybe not the sprag clutch yet ...
