Bob has a customer with a Nordwest starter problem and has asked me to see if anyone on the forum can help. Now the customer in question may well be one of the good gentlemen that use this forum regularly and I’m sure you’ll let me know if that’s the case!

Bob says the Nordwest starter motor shaft has a type of Bendix with washers and springs and there is a spacer with cams, the ends of the cams have worn away. Now Bob says there is no part number for these bits and they’re not available so he’s asking if there is anyone out there with an old starter assembly that they would like to move on? A picture paints a thousand words, he has sent me a one and hopefully it's attached.

Hi, I have an RC and a now dismantled Nordwest both of the same year, the RC starter nose is just a direct mesh gear and the retaining nose is short. The nordy has a longer nose and housed in there, the end of the starter shaft, 1 gear and 6 pre loaded cup washers, odd spacers and those 2 dog gears like you discuss, so technically I have them, weather or not to part with them, I will have a think, because firsts and foremost is keeping the machines going but secondly are my future needs.

I have a spare short nose starter motor and a spare engine to fit it to and as far as I can tell without removing them the 3 bike i have are all the same starter motor,
Nig please can you check if they are interchangeable in the little alli cover that goes on top the crank case,
The cup washer assemble sounds like a clutch designed to slip if the engine was locked up, so as not to overload the started motor, is it needed???

the parts in the 'long nose' case are some kind of a slip clutch.
Newer Nordies and RC/Cs should have this kind of starter motor.
There has been a problem with 'flying away' starter motors when you put your finger on the start button while the 4stroke engine was still turning ;)
Therefore Luigi added the extra slip clutch.
As Luigi added it, you can just remove it.
Better said mount a 'short nose' (like this words) starter

Most of the starter motor problems are due to a weak starter clutch. But i suppose Mr Wright knows about that.
Next would be to check the electrical parts of the motor itself. Stator and rotor windings. Here around Bosch workshops can test this.

good luck, Joachim
