Hello everyone.
I am the fortunate new owner of an Northwest. But....
I have a oil pressure sensor that thinks that the oil pressure is too low.
Before I go to the bank to get a second mortgage in my house to buy a new oil pump:lol: , I would like to test the pressure switch first.
I have read that the the oil pump should deliver a pressure off 4 bar @ 5500rev/min.
But can anyone tell me at what pressure the oil pressure switch should break (turn the low oil pressure warning light off)?
Best regards Erik

Hmm .. sometimes the answer comes once you start taking things apart and investigate.
I measured the break pressure to be less than 0,1 bar. Meaning the low oil pressure warning lamp will turn off at ~0,1 bar oil pressure.

that's not very much
Is that meaning that you have an oil pressure less than 0,1bar
You bought the Nordie with this problem?
Did the previous onwer overhaul the engine before?
If i remember right there are one or more little plugs closing oil bores.
Maybe they got lost somehow.

ciao Joachim

Hi Joachim.
I bought the bike with the problem, or to be exact, I didn't have an opportunity to have the bike started.
Since the low oil pressure lamp does not turn off, I am afraid the oil pressure in my engine is less than 0,1 bar !
I don't know if it makes sense that the switch breaks at 0.1 bar. But I suppose the oil pressure is very low when the engine is running at idle. I would guess that the pressure switch should not light up the low oil pressure lamp even if the engine was running at 1000 rev /min.
It sounds very interesting with the oil plugs you mention, I must look into this.
Next step will be to get to the oil pump and see what is going on....
Best regards Erik

Hi Chaps

Why do you think you have low oil pressure?
Would you not replace the switch first?
How are you measuring the oil pressure?
Not knowing the History or the Bike? Go easy first, more likely to be the switch or the sensor in the speedo head.

Just a thought...could be wrong.

Cheers

Hi ZacPike.
Well the oil warning light did not go out when the engine was running, that's why I suspected a low oil pressure.
After I have measured that the pressure switch actually work fine, there is no longer any reason to change it. But I was going to change before I saw that it worked.
The oil pressure from the pump could be measured by replacing the pressure switch with a pressure gauge.
The oil pressure switch was tested by connecting it to an air supply with adjustable pressure, and then increasing the pressure until the pressure switch broke the circuit.
