The workshop manual gives freeplay of between 35-40 mm on a vertical unloaded bike. Can any one advise if this correct as when loaded with 80kg rider the chain is then very tight. If I slacken the chain to 65-70 approx freeplay unloaded, when loaded the chain has approx 29-25 mm play which seems more useful. Any constructive comments gratefully received!

Sounds very tricky! Has the rear ride height been increased by adding preload or fitting a longer shock? That would change the unloaded chain line by the miracle of geometry. Some Ducatis such as the ST series had a ride height link that could be adjusted for quicker turn-in, but extra chain slack was needed to prevent the gearbox bearings being harmed on full bump. The ideal way to set chain tension is, of course, to load the rear until the swing-arm gives a straight run from sprocket centre to wheel centre and set it right there.

Thanks Nick, I usually use the three finger method above the swing arm but I’m sure I’ve seen a recommendation of 65-70mm below the swing arm somewhere but cannot recall where. Standard shock etc.

Just found it in the Fact Sheet for the 600 RC 60-70mm on side stand unloaded!
