It's been a while since I did it on a Saturno or Nordwest but I've done it recently on a GFR. I get brutal and lock the back wheel with a length of 2 x 4 between a spoke and the swing arm. On the KTM that has holes in the rear sprocket I jam a socket extension in one up against the swing arm. Select top gear and take up all the chain slack first.

A 'rattle gun' (impact screwdriver, air or electric) can help but I've sometimes had to resort to a 'breaker bar' if not loosened for a while, though to be fair that's more a case of the gearbox sprocket nut.

Im not being tricky, but I use an air gun... as locking up the motor is a pain, I did use a rag once fed into the belt at the crank whilst locking up the transmission in 5th gear with the footbrake on, that was good after a bit of stress. Also... dont laugh, as an apprentice I have locked up a motor with a light guage rope with knots in in popped in the plug hole and gently bring the motor up to TDC on the comp stroke, rope between piston crown and head locks the motor... but be gentle !

I have used the 72degrees method into 5th gear and a big lump of wood into wheel on top of swing arm

Its off and the belt is now replaced. Front wheel against wall plus 5th gear instead of first (d'oh) and the flywheel came off.

yay!!

also good result the water pump turns really smoothly in both directions.

Good project.

The old belt looked really old.
