What I have noticed is that the std timing marks are very slightly advanced when at tdc with the belt correctly tensioned, not up to 1 tooth out, maybe 1 degree...

That's normal (Luigi style)
Last year i had a Nordie here which don't start. Everything seems to be ok, but the marks on the crank where nearly half a tooth different. Ok wrong mounted belt. No ;)
After a lang time of searching it turned out to be a plug problem and a faulty wire.
But that didn't help *you*
Maybe it would help to send your problem to the Gileraclub forum.
There are a lot of people there who are reacing with heavy tuned Gileras ;)

Hi Joachim,
I'm pretty sure this is a standard unmodified engine, I have not had chance to check valve clearance yet, hopefully tomorrow, I'm hopping to find the clearances tight, which allows me to increase them and possibly reduce the valve lift a little :( that's the 1st time ever I have not wanted to increase valve lift:blush: I've always been a believer in more is better for almost everything in engines - capacity, compression, valve lift/overlap, revs, torque, Kw, you name it more is better. Oh and more money to pay for the development B) :woohoo:
And have built quite a few engines with lots more of everything B)
Regards
John

some kind of misunderstanding ;)
What i want to say is, there must be something wrong.
And there are people out there who know this engine very well. Therefore.
Maybe ist's worth to have a look at the camshaft wheels. As Pete said there is sometimes troubble at this place.
They have a steel insert which is comming loose. Maybe.
I don't think that there is so little space between the piston and the valves. There *is* something wrong :(

ciao joachim

Well I checked valve clearance, exhaust OK, inlets a little loose, so removed cam pulleys, now they were loose :S the fixing bolt was tight and no sign of fretting between the cam and pulley inside diameters, or the keys and keyways.
Both cams have a journal diameter of 19.97mm and the internal diameter of the pulleys is 20.01.
So a 0.04 clearance - very sloppy :( many cam pulleys on other engines I have removed have needed a puller to get them off
Other than new sleeves in the pulleys, or locktite adhesive any other known cures??
Regards
John
