Wondering what would cause the bike to pop on over run, started doing it in last few weeks.

Usually air being drawn into the exhaust system when you close the throttle to slow or change down, allows unburnt fuel to re-ignite,
Run a little rich and get a big bang and flames out the exhaust for a better effect

Dial in a wee bit richer mixture and it'll pop all over the place...braap braap pop pop pop....also remove the db killer.

Check the head to down-pipe - maybe drawing from the exhaust gasket? A wee bit of soot/blow by with give the game away.

I remember my tl1000r suzuki used to backfire, that was a duff exhaust gasket, should've thought about that.
