Thanks Joachim.

Knowing I can remove the roller (if needed) has put my mind at rest.

I'll give it a shot tomorrow and see how I go.

regards,
A.

I usually ended up removing the tensioner roller. It's not too hard to get it back on OK as long as you note the position of the washers as Joachim advised.

While you have the alternator rotor off check that the ignition timing pips are nice and clean. Also the ignition sender. Make sure the air gap bewteen sender and pips is set correctly (or perhaps you don't have to remove the sender on a Saturno?). One time my tuned Nordie was reluctant to start I found the pips were a bit mucky (shoudn't matter really in theory) and the air gap too wide.

I did have to go a grade softer on the plug on that tuned motor (with early true CDI) though to give reliable starting in cold weather.

Phew. All done, and that oh-no moment when you first fire up the engine has been passed...

I removed the roller and replaced the belt, set the timing as per the book, and fired the old dear up. No horrible noises and she immediately settled down into a nice regular idle. Relief!

I didn't check the sender but it all seemed fine. I'll take her for a run tomorrow and check everything over.

Now - tyres...she's got some worn Continental Road Attacks on at the moment, with a 160 rear tyre. She seems to track fine if you're not leant over too far, but then seems to 'flop' if you go any further. I see that a 140/70 is the standard rear tyre - so will go for a pair of 110/70 and 140/70's.

I know that tyres are a very personal thing - and I have always gotten on well with Pirelli's, going way back to the mid-80's. Does anyone have advice about what works well on a Saturno?

Thank you all for your help and advice.

A.

When I had the 'Norturno' I used Pirelli Dragons on it (they may even still be on John?).

Can't remember the sizes. If you can get dual compound tyres in the correct sizes I can recommend those. Michelin Pilot Road 2CTs get good reports. I run Pilot Power 2CTs on my Shiver (as I did on the Voxan) but they don't last long.

I think you wont get a 140/70 rear tyre any more. At least nothing like a modern sport tyre.
The Saturno rim is a bit small for a modern 160/60. For some old Metzeler it was ok. But rims are getting wider and wider over the years.
So 150/60 would be a good choice.
And you can get this easy.
@Pete Dragons??? They also have gone many years ago ;)
What's on the catalog nowadays?
Diablo? Angel? Can't remember the name of the super-sport tyre (never need such a thing)
But nearly every major brand has something 110/70 and 150/60.
Pireli, Metzeler, Continental, Michelin, Bridgestone

ciao Joachim

The Dragons were still on it when I sold it Joachim. ;)

I have 'H' rated Pirelli Diablos on the GFR. They have warmed up very nicely at Cadwell Park when I've done track days there. :)

I hear very good reports of the Michelin Pilot Road 3 as an 'all round' tyre.
