Hello again chaps.

Good news: the Dakota was successfully fired up on Saturday! Despite many, many manful attempts to crank the beast with the newly-fitted kickstart, eventually opted to have the starter motor rebuilt.

More news and hopefully pics when I get down to Rosso Corse.

Bike is pretty much ready to go, but a major snag is that the interior of the petrol tank is absolutely full of rust. I am told that conventional methods of de-rusting/ sealing would be very time consuming and consequently expensive.

Any ideas from anyone?

Cannot imagine being able to track down a good-condition tank.

I have shaken vigorously with a few round stones inside and then flushed before using a sealer.

hmmm if you did not remove the rust very carefull the sealer may come of by the time.
Then you will have a lot of troubble.
Best for removing the rust is phosphoric acid (ok maybe second best, blasting may be even better)
Before using it you will have to degrease the tanks inner side.
A little problem which can appear... if the metal is very thin, etching may end up in pinholes
