Kano, any chance of a sketch of your flange or image if you have such a thing?

Could be useful for me as I have limited fabrication facilities.

Thanks for the KTM number. I looked it up and found Chinese ones for £20 and others for £40, so I've ordered one of the latter from the UK. The seller I chose had some basic dimensions (ID and OD) noted, and it looks as though my Cagiva Canyon 500 spare is indeed the same, and it cost approx £40 too. Not that I've tried (or needed) to fit it yet. I figure a bike is useless if you can't start it, so it's good to have spares in hand.

I started on dismantling my #1 Nordwest, and the flywheel fell off as the nut came free, so no need for the puller. I was using an electric hammer gun so presumably that cracked the taper. What was interesting was that some water had been inside the flywheel housing and formed a patch of rust that had fouled the ignition pickup too. Maybe another good reason for the motor being reluctant to start recently? Whatever, I think this bike deserves a new cam-belt too while I'm in the area.

If you don’t know the age of the belt, renew it automatically. If not damage can be expensive to rectify.

Well, it turns out that I renewed this belt exactly a year ago. I do get confused between this Nordie and the other one...

So far, so good with the starter sprag. The entire unit came out pretty easily, but the sprag was locked: no movement in either direction. I fitted it in a Myford 3-jaw chuck and used a tiny cold chisel to lift the edges of the casing and eventually coaxed it apart. It turned out that the rollers were badly worn on the inside and outside, so presumably that's why it had jammed. The good news is that the tracks were OK and the new Cagiva-spec sprag I already had was the perfect fit. I've put the assembled unit back in and the starter turns the motor over nicely, so we're almost in business!
