@ Pete solid head gasket in copper or aluminium?
What would be the better choice? Any experience?
I am just thinking about getting made a aluminium gasket for my 102mm kit

ciao joachim

Frigerio used a thin copper gasket. The first time I built mine it didn't last very long at all and 'blew' properly. I got a slightly thicker one made which lasted longer but started to pressurise the cooling system at the Ramsey 5000 (5 Kms of the IoM TT course) hill climb.

I rebuilt the top end again with an FPM gasket, new cylinder studs and rings of 'Gasket Goo' round the coolant passages. This laster longer until, you've guessed it, the next Ramsey 500 hill climb.

It was just a very light weep under severe pressure and it was still like that when i sold the bike.

Kano Nordi has that FPM top end now and I think he is going for an aluminium gasket. He's a proper engineer so it must be better I note that Lambertini changed from composition gaskets to solid aluminum alloy ones on the Morini. ;)

Thanks for the (im)proper engineer - the FPM kit is is my new bike house, I have just moved, when I get the spare engine in from the UK, it is coming in pieces as its top end is knackered after breaking a valve but I plan to use an alluminium gasket, there is not much to choose between alli and copper as a gasket material, but I feel it is better not to use too many dissimilar materials around a water cooling system as you can get an electrolytic reaction between them
Good luck
John

Beside the Hahne-Power kit there is another solution for the lack of displacement.
100mm!
Going over 100mm will end up in getting a new liner made for the cylinder (as done in the Gottfried kit) And also in the old Friggherio kit?
In Germany there is a 100mm kit available from Volker Heim.

You can use yout original Nordie cylinde and engine case. The only thing to do is to bore the cylinder and recoate the surface. Nearly plug and play ;)

The 102mm kit from Gottfried needs some extra work. You have to make the upper end of the con rod slightly smaller.

ciao joachim

BTW for all those who need a 'standard' head gasket (not solid metall) Somewhere i have a adresse of someone who can make custom gaskets. About some 30 Euro if i remember right
