a few years ago we had a Nordie with these symptoms on our anual meeting.
I will ask the owner how it was cured in the end.
But as far as i remember he changed everything in the cooling system until the problems have been gone

Sounds like the thermostat was the culprit then. Slightly concerned about blowing coolant out, but the same test run with no thermostat will be informative.

Soooooo, been out for a ride, It's quite nippy for a 350 I must say.
Certainly handles and brakes very well.
When you wind it on, the temperature gauge slowly rises, still in the green, but at the upper level, before the white bit then the red, it doesn't get into the red. It does come down again a little when you ride at a more sedate pace, but not to the middle area.
Here's (yet another ) question. When, or at what point at the temperature gauge, does the fan come on?, mine never does when the engine is running, but if I switch the engine off, then the ignition back on, the fan will run for 20 or so seconds?. Normal?. Is the temp slowly rising because the fan isn't coming on?, should it in fact come on when you are riding to bring the temp down?, I think perhaps not?.

I'd say the fan should definitely come on, at least occasionally when you are riding in heavy traffic or stopped at lights for a while on a warm day. My experience is of a Nordwest, not a Saturno though as the Nordturno had no fan in my ownership - just an LED that indicated when it should be on. I can't remember what temperature it actually cut in at.

the gauge is not very accurate i think.
Have you checked if there is the resistor in the wire or not?
Early Saturnos (at least the 500ccm) had problems with 'overheating'
Luigi solved this in the russian way ;)
He just added a resistor before the gauge.
Of course it wasn't a real overheating problem. Owners got nervous when watching the needle climbing up to the red area.
So he lowered the position a bit.

I asked the Nordie owner what he has done to solve his overheating problem.
After a litte round on the Nuerburgring Nordschleife he suddenly had a problem with water spilling out.
He was not shure what kind of problem he had.
Water pump, had gasket???
The problem is solved now, but he did not know what it was.
He replaced all the parts involved in the cooling system and the problem was gone

OK, splashed out and ordered a new radiator fan switch, the Volvo one, I'll let you know if it makes a difference.
